A Quick Break

A Quick Break is a short city encounter for fantasy tabletop RPGs, designed for Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition.

While wandering through the city, the party stumbles upon several city guards gathered in an out-of-the-way alley. At first, it looks suspicious. They are whispering, reacting far too loudly, and clearly doing something that has nothing to do with patrol duty.

Then the characters see the chalk circle on the ground.

Inside it are crickets, beetles, and a very serious-looking mantis.

This is not a dangerous encounter. It is a lighthearted urban vignette about off-duty guards, tiny wagers, bad excuses, and a bug-betting ring that probably should not exist.

The characters can ignore it, watch from the side, join the betting, call out a cheater, or make friends with a few guards who would very much prefer that their captain never hears about this.
